Gas installation is one of the most technically demanding and safety-critical trade services performed in a residential property. Every gas connection involves a combustible fuel under pressure — a combination that requires precise pipe sizing, correct material selection, leak-proof jointing, adequate ventilation provision, and formal compliance testing. On the Gold Coast, where the mix of natural gas availability (reticulated in many suburbs from Yatala through to Coolangatta) and LPG (bottled gas for areas without natural gas supply) creates a diverse gas landscape, a licensed gas fitter must be proficient in both gas types and the different installation requirements each demands.

Gas Cooktop and Oven Installation — The Most Common Gas Install

Connecting a gas cooktop or oven is the most frequent gas installation request on the Gold Coast. Most modern Gold Coast kitchens have a gas bayonet outlet installed under the bench during construction — a quick-disconnect fitting that allows a gas cooktop to be connected using a flexible gas connector (braided stainless steel hose with bayonet fitting). If a gas bayonet exists, connection is straightforward: the correct length flexible connector is fitted between the bayonet and the cooktop's gas inlet, the connection is tested for leaks, and the cooktop burners are tested for correct flame pattern and ignition. Total time: 30–60 minutes.

If no gas bayonet exists — either because the kitchen was originally all-electric, the cooktop is being relocated during a renovation, or the house was built without gas to the kitchen — a new gas line must be run from the nearest gas point or from the gas meter. This involves calculating the gas pipe size required for the appliance's rated input (measured in megajoules per hour), running copper or PE pipe through the building structure to the kitchen, installing a bayonet fitting or isolation valve at the appliance location, pressure testing the entire new section, and issuing a compliance notice.

Outdoor Gas Lines — BBQs, Alfresco Kitchens, and Patio Heaters

The Gold Coast's outdoor lifestyle means alfresco cooking, entertaining, and outdoor heating are extremely popular. A dedicated gas line to the outdoor area eliminates the hassle of LPG bottles — no more running out of gas mid-cook, no bottle changeovers, and no unsightly bottles cluttering the patio. The installation runs a gas pipe from inside the building (typically from a tee off the kitchen gas line or directly from the meter) through the external wall or underground to the outdoor area. A bayonet fitting provides a quick-disconnect point for portable BBQs; a permanent connection with an isolation valve is used for built-in BBQs and alfresco kitchens. Underground PE pipe sections must be buried at the minimum depth specified in AS/NZS 5601 and marked with identification tape.

Typical gas appliances in a new Gold Coast home include a gas cooktop (18–24 MJ/hr), gas continuous flow hot water system (130–200 MJ/hr), and potentially a gas BBQ line, gas fireplace, and gas dryer. The pipe sizing must accommodate all appliances operating simultaneously at their maximum rated input.
