Tap replacement is the most frequent individual plumbing task in an Australian home. Every home has at least 5–8 taps (kitchen, bathroom basin, bath, laundry, and outdoor), each with a working life of 10–20 years before the internal mechanism wears out and requires either repair or replacement. On the Gold Coast — where hard water in some suburbs accelerates ceramic disc wear and rubber seal degradation — taps at the lower end of that lifespan range are common.

Choosing the Right Tap — WaterMark Certification Is Non-Negotiable

Every tap installed in an Australian plumbing system must carry WaterMark certification. This is not a recommendation — it is a legal requirement under the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA). WaterMark certification confirms the product has been tested and meets Australian standards for pressure rating, flow rate, material safety (no lead leaching), and durability. Taps without WaterMark certification — commonly found on online marketplaces from overseas manufacturers — may not withstand Australian mains pressure (which can exceed 500 kPa on the Gold Coast), may contain lead or other contaminants that leach into drinking water, and may have fittings that are incompatible with Australian pipe connections.

A licensed plumber should decline to install a tap that is not WaterMark certified. If you've already purchased a tap and it doesn't have WaterMark certification, it cannot legally be installed in your plumbing system. Kitchen Tap Installation — The Workhorse Fixture

The kitchen mixer tap is the most heavily used tap in any home. It handles dish washing, food preparation, hand washing, filling pots and kettles, and cleaning — cycling on and off dozens of times per day. The modern kitchen mixer has evolved from a simple fixed-spout lever mixer to a range of configurations: gooseneck mixers with high-arc spouts for filling large pots, pull-out spray mixers with retractable hose heads for flexible rinsing, dual-function mixers with stream and spray modes, filtered water mixers with a dedicated filtered water lever, and sensor-activated touchless mixers for hygienic hands-free operation.

When replacing a kitchen mixer, the key compatibility considerations are: the number of holes in the sink or bench-top (single-hole for most modern mixers, three-hole for older tap set configurations); the bench-top thickness (some mixers require a specific bench thickness range for the mounting nut to engage correctly); and the under-bench clearance for flexible hose connections and any pull-out hose recoil mechanism.

Outdoor Tap Installation — Adding a Garden Tap

Installing a new outdoor tap (hose cock) on an exterior wall is one of the most requested plumbing additions on the Gold Coast. Garden watering, car washing, pool topping, pressure washer connection, and outdoor entertaining all require a convenient external water supply. The installation involves running a new pipe branch from the nearest internal water supply pipe through the external wall, mounting the tap at a convenient height (typically 400–600 mm above ground), and installing an isolation valve so the outdoor tap can be shut off independently. A backflow prevention device is required where the outdoor tap could be connected to a hose that might create a cross-connection risk — for example, a hose submerged in a pool or connected to a chemical sprayer.
