What to Do While You Wait for the Plumber
The most important thing you can do in the first five minutes of a plumbing emergency is stop the water, gas, or electricity feeding the problem. Here's how, do only what's safe, and always call us before attempting anything you're unsure about.
Burst pipe or major water leak
Turn off your water at the mains. The meter is usually at the front boundary or side of the property. The tap turns clockwise (right) to shut off. Then open a couple of the lowest taps in the house to drain pressure out of the lines.
Hot water system leaking
Turn off the isolation valve on the cold-water inlet to the tank. For electric systems, switch off the hot water circuit at the switchboard. For gas, close the gas isolation valve at the appliance.
Gas smell, treat as urgent
Don't switch anything on or off (including lights). Turn the gas off at the meter or bottle if you can do so safely. Open windows, get people outside, then call us on 0405 356 912. For a life-threatening leak also call 000 or Origin Gas Leaks 1800 GAS LEAK.
Active roof leak during a storm
Put buckets or towels under the drip. Move electronics, furniture, and rugs clear of the area. Take photos of the leak and any damage, you'll want them for your insurance claim. Do not go up on the roof in wet weather.
