The unit body hangs from this flange — the weight is carried by the sink and the mounting assembly, not by the waste pipe. The outlet of the disposal connects to the waste trap via a standard 40 mm waste pipe connection, maintaining the existing trap and waste pipe run to the sewer.

If the kitchen has a dishwasher, the dishwasher drain hose connects to a nipple on the disposal unit body. This routes dishwasher waste water through the disposal before it enters the waste pipe — a convenient integration that eliminates the need for a separate dishwasher waste connection.

Choosing the Right Unit Size

Waste disposal units are classified by motor power, which determines grinding capacity and the types of food waste they can handle. Compact models (0.5–0.55 HP): Suitable for small households (1–2 people) with light food waste — fruit and vegetable peels, bread, cooked scraps. Not recommended for bones or hard waste. Standard models (0.65–0.75 HP): The most popular size for Gold Coast families. Handles all soft food waste plus small bones (chicken, fish), pasta, rice, and moderate volumes. Premium models (1.0 HP and above): Continuous-feed units with stainless steel grinding chambers that handle everything including small to medium bones, fibrous vegetables, and high volumes. Quieter motors with sound insulation and longer warranties. We recommend matching the unit capacity to your household size and cooking habits rather than defaulting to the smallest model.

Maintenance and Longevity

A waste disposal unit requires minimal maintenance: always run cold water before, during, and for 15 seconds after disposing food waste (cold water solidifies grease so it's ground and flushed rather than coating the pipes); periodically grind citrus peels or ice cubes to clean the grinding chamber and sharpen the impellers; never pour cooking oil or grease into the unit (it solidifies in the waste pipe downstream); and avoid fibrous vegetables like celery, corn husks, and artichoke leaves that can wrap around the impellers.
