Replacing a toilet is one of those plumbing jobs that sounds straightforward but requires precise measurement, correct material selection, and compliant installation to avoid leaks, sewage odours, and structural damage. The toilet is the only fixture in a home that connects directly to the sewer system — the soil pipe carrying waste to the sewer main. A poorly installed toilet can leak sewage onto the bathroom floor, allow sewer gases into the home through an unsealed waste connection, or cause water damage from a failed cistern connection that drips undetected behind or beneath the unit.

Choosing the Right Toilet — Set-Out, Trap Type, and Compatibility

The most critical measurement when choosing a replacement toilet is the set-out — the distance from the finished wall behind the toilet to the centre of the waste pipe in the floor (for S-trap toilets) or the centre of the waste pipe in the wall (for P-trap toilets). On the Gold Coast, the most common set-outs are 120 mm and 140 mm for newer homes, and 200 mm for older homes. If the new toilet's set-out doesn't match the existing rough-in position, either the waste pipe must be modified (adding cost) or the toilet will sit too far from the wall (creating an unsightly gap) or too close (preventing proper installation).

Many modern toilet suites are designed with variable set-out connectors that accommodate a range — for example, 100–200 mm — using an adjustable pan connector. This flexibility makes them compatible with most existing installations without pipe modification. We always measure the existing set-out before recommending a specific toilet suite to ensure compatibility.

Water Efficiency — Why Upgrading Your Toilet Saves Money

Toilets manufactured before 2005 typically use 9–11 litres per flush on a single-flush mechanism. Modern dual-flush toilets certified to a minimum 4-star WELS rating use 3 litres for a half flush and 4.5 litres for a full flush. For a household flushing the toilet an average of 15–20 times per day, upgrading from an old single-flush to a modern dual-flush saves approximately 50,000–80,000 litres of water per year. Wall-Hung Toilets — The Modern Premium Option

Wall-hung toilets are increasingly popular in Gold Coast bathroom renovations. The pan is mounted on the wall with no floor contact, and the cistern is concealed inside the wall cavity. The visual result is a clean, floating toilet with open floor space beneath — easier to clean, more hygienic, and visually modern. The flush mechanism is activated by a plate mounted on the wall above the pan.

The installation is more complex than a standard floor-mounted toilet. A steel support frame must be installed inside the wall cavity, securely anchored to the floor and wall structure. The frame carries the weight of the pan and the user (rated to 400+ kg). The concealed cistern sits inside the frame and connects to the water supply and sewer pipe within the wall. The wall is then closed, tiled, and the flush plate fitted. Access for future cistern maintenance is through the flush plate opening.

Gold Coast Toilet Installation Considerations

Sewer connection compliance: All toilet installations must connect to the sewer system in accordance with AS/NZS 3500.2. The connection must be airtight and watertight, with a proper seal between the pan outlet and the waste pipe to prevent sewer gas leakage into the bathroom.

Floor flange condition: The floor flange (the brass or PVC collar set into the floor that the toilet bolts onto) must be in serviceable condition. Corroded, cracked, or broken floor flanges must be replaced during installation — this is a common issue in Gold Coast homes over 20 years old where the original brass flange has deteriorated.

Accessibility requirements: If the installation is part of an accessible bathroom (ageing-in-place, disability modification, or commercial/public facility), the toilet must comply with AS 1428.1 including seat height (460–480 mm), grab rail clearances, and approach space dimensions.
