A dripping shower is not just an annoyance — it is a plumbing failure that wastes water, damages infrastructure, and costs money every day it continues. A shower dripping at one drop per second wastes approximately 20 litres per day, or over 7,000 litres per year. On the Gold Coast, where water is metered and charged per kilolitre by the City of Gold Coast, that wasted water adds directly to your quarterly bill. More critically, a shower leak that extends beyond the visible drip — water escaping through the mixer body into the wall cavity, or through failed waterproofing into the ceiling below — causes structural damage that compounds over months and years of undetected moisture infiltration.

The Shower Mixer Cartridge — The Most Common Point of Failure

The mixer cartridge is the internal valve mechanism housed inside the shower mixer body (the chrome fitting recessed into the wall). It consists of precision-ground ceramic discs, rubber seals, O-rings, and a spindle assembly that controls water flow rate and hot/cold blending ratio when you turn the handle. Every time the shower is used, the ceramic discs rotate against each other under mains water pressure. Over thousands of cycles — typically 8 to 15 years depending on water quality, usage frequency, and mixer brand — the ceramic surfaces wear, the rubber seals harden and crack, and the O-rings lose elasticity.

The symptoms progress gradually: the handle becomes stiff or notchy; temperature control becomes less precise; a slow drip appears from the shower head after the mixer is turned off; the drip rate increases over weeks; and eventually water flows continuously from the head even with the mixer firmly off. At this stage, the cartridge has fully failed and requires replacement.

Cartridge replacement is a straightforward repair for a licensed plumber. The mixer handle and trim plate are removed from the front (tile side), the cartridge is extracted from the mixer body, and a new cartridge is installed. No tile removal is required. The repair takes 30–90 minutes and costs $180–$380 depending on the cartridge type and brand. Shower Base Leaks — The Hidden Damage Problem

A shower base leak is different from a mixer leak. The water is not dripping from the shower head — it is escaping through the floor of the shower, typically through the junction between the shower drain and the waterproofing membrane, through cracks in the membrane itself, or through deteriorated grout and tile joints that allow water to penetrate the substrate beneath the tiles.

On the Gold Coast, where homes frequently have bathrooms on upper levels, a shower base leak manifests as water stains, bubbling paint, or damp patches on the ceiling of the room directly below the bathroom. By the time these signs are visible, the water has been leaking for weeks or months, saturating the ceiling plasterboard, timber framing, and potentially promoting mould growth in the concealed cavity.

Repair involves isolating the leak source (drain connection vs. membrane failure vs. grout deterioration), removing tiles in the affected area to access the waterproofing membrane, repairing or replacing the membrane, and re-tiling the shower floor and walls as required. This is a multi-day repair involving plumbing, waterproofing, and tiling trades.

1980s–2000s homes (Helensvale, Southport, Benowa, Ashmore, Nerang, Robina, Varsity Lakes, Mudgeeraba): Mixer cartridge failures on original-era mixers reaching 20–40 years old. Cartridges often discontinued — full mixer replacement required. Shower base waterproofing reaching end of life, particularly in tiled shower-over-bath combinations where the waterproofing was marginal by current standards.

2000s–2010s homes (Coomera, Upper Coomera, Pimpama, Ormeau, Hope Island, Reedy Creek): First round of cartridge failures on 15–20 year old mixers. Waterproofing generally still serviceable. Flexible hose connections to hand-held shower sets failing due to rubber degradation.
